Factors in Admissions Decisions

Colleges use many factors to build their incoming classes that fit with their mission and goals.  The colleges will want to have the opportunity to evaluate students based upon the characteristics they bring to campus including special talents, academic interests and personal traits.  Below is a list of the factors that are considered in admissions decisions.

- Grades in College Prep classes

- Strength of Curriculum

- Admissions Test Scores

- Grades in all courses

- Essay

- Demonstrated Interest

-  Recommendation letter(s)

- Class rank (if applicable)

- AP/ IB Subject Test Scores

- Portfolio

- Interview

- Extracurricular activities

- Leadership

- Work experiences

- Volunteer experiences

 

There are also factors that students do not have control over which colleges consider such as:

- Geographic location

- If a student is the first in their family to go to college

- A student's race or ethnicity

- If a student is related to any alumni members
